Wanneer een bergdorp meer eer toekomt dan een metropool: Ethiek, politiek en filosofie bij Dion Chrysostomos
- Maarten Taveirne
Abstract
Throughout his oeuvre, the 1st century orator Dio Chrysostom shows a remarkably consistent ethical system. It seems that he developed this system in close relationship to the political situation of the cities in the eastern Roman Empire, as he pleads for an encompassing deontological behavior in private as well as in public life. Whereas many cities were struggling with each other for their own interests, Dio incites his audience to imitate the ultimate harmony of the cosmos in their lives and politics.
