Abstract
Recent publications have thoroughly challenged the traditional academic view on the cultural impact of Greek colonisation in the western Mediterranean. In this article, this evolution is examined through the casus of the aristocratic symposion. Whereas a couple of decades ago, scholars still spoke of the ʻadoptionʼ of Greek feasting rituals by indigenous populations of the colonies or neighbouring regions, the discourse has shifted to the ʻinteractionʼ of specific local rituals of which the Greek symposion is only one. Nowadays, the finds of certain accoutrements of the symposion outside Greece are rightfully seen as no more than exotic status markers, acquired by local indigenous elites to legitimate their authority or political aspirations.
