Abstract

This article analyses how young adults with cancer experience their body, based on a qualitative data analysis. The confrontation with cancer disrupts the relationship between the young adults and their body. Mainly in young women, the stigmatising reactions to hair loss provoke a negative body image and a negative self image. The young women try to reduce the impact of the stigma, for example by hiding the bald head. Because of a reduced fitness, young adults have to learn to cope with the limitations of their body. Some try to regain their body strength in a gradual way, others fight the limitations of their body. Some look for professional help, others ignore or avoid professional advice. Their attitude towards their body or towards professional help is strongly influenced by their personal goals. The personal goals of young adults often have to do with sports or making transitions such as finishing their studies.
