Abstract

This article gives a state of the art of the sociology of work. It discusses key concepts, points to their evolution and mutual relationships, and illustrates them with examples from Flanders. The article makes clear that the 'leisure society' might be proclaimed, but hasn't arrived yet. Work is still central to our society, notwithstanding the changes in the content of work (work opportunities, the type of work, conditions of employment, working conditions, ...). The study of the organisation of work, the labour market and the labour relations continues to be important, also for sociology. The article sketches these three arenas and points for each to the tension between competition (and flexibility) on the one hand, and solidarity on the other.
