Abstract
In this essay, the author reviews 25 years of sociological research on poverty and social exclusion in Flanders. He does so in following two lines: what has been published on these matters (and on social inequality in general) in the “Tijdschrift voor Sociologie” (the Flemish Journal of sociology) and what were the main developments in the 'outer world'? As the editor of the “Jaarboek Armoede en Sociale Uitsluiting” since 1992, he uses this Yearbook on Poverty and Social Exclusion as a kind of shorthand for 'the outer world'. His main conclusion is that a soft form of paradigmatic shift has occurred somewhere in the 90s, replacing the dominant income approach by a multidimensional approach and by introducing new research methods (qualitative research and network analysis).
