Abstract
This essay describes the birth of the Flemish Journal of sociology, "Tijdschrift voor Sociologie". Written by the journals first editor-in-chief, Wilfried Dumon, the essay offers an inside view of how the Journal was conceived and developed. The essay points to the institutions that were involved and the decisions that were taken, regarding technical and financial issues, and regarding content. It considers and evaluates the two goals of the Journal: to be a general sociological Journal, and to establish bridges between academic sociology and sociology as a profession. Finally, it points out what made (and makes) the Journal stand apart from other journals in Flanders (Belgium).
