Abstract

This article describes the ways in which people in interfaith marriages deal with their difference in religion. After conducting a review of literature on Mormon doctrine and interfaith marriages, an exploratory qualitative study investigates the factors that determine the marital satisfaction in Mormon interfaith marriages. Five factors are found to be important: the degree of religious heterogamy, the religious activity, the cognitive and normative differences, the expressive characteristics of the marriage and the interpersonal attitudes. In particular, the interpersonal attitudes seem to have an overall influence on the quality of interfaith marriages. However, it should be noted that an interfaith marriage always demands a sacrifice: either a low marital satisfaction, the abstinence of religious practices, or an intensive effort combined with adaptive abilities to keep the balance between religion and marriage.
