Authors such as Sennett, Lofland and Zijderveld suggest that urban culture bas a long-term tendency towards increasing monotony, impersonality, tactile sterility and emotional poverty. This essay argues that this assumed tendency should by no means be generalised. Anthropological evidence gathered during the author's stay in Bombay clearly shows that the 'linear' model of urban cultural development has no universal meaning, As the case of Bombay illustrates, not only should different models of urban cultural development be distinguished, but these models may be coexisting within one city as well.
