Abstract
During the last two decades, we witnessed the growth of a research tradition which tried to analyze history in terms of class. Authors use models in which classes, class-conflicts and alliances between classes, are used as explanatory factors. This paper gives an overview of one specific research program in this tradition of "comparative historical class analysis". More specifically, in this paper the work is discussed of those authors, beginning with Barrington Moore, who tried to explain the emergence and survival of democratic regimes on the basis of class analysis.
