Abstract
The postwar growth of school provision has hitherto attracted oi interest in Belgium. In this article, I portray the evolution of the relative school participation of each age group (16-28 years) during the period 1961-1991. Attention is given, first, to developments on a national level. Next, I focus on the importance of geographical differences: between Flanders and the Walloon region, between the centre and the periphery of Belgium, and between the Belgian provinces. One surprising finding is that intraregional differences appear to be greater than interregional differences. Finally, explanations for the overall developments and its ‘details’ are sought in the self-organising and self-stimulating characteristics of the educational system.
