Abstract
Dealing with the world of humanist organizations in Belgium, and especially in French-speaking Belgium, is not an easy task for the sociologist. The author gives a sketchy description of what he calls the "nucleus" of a new pillarization, with due regard to its historical roots. He points to the ambiguity of the claim for "official" recognition by the State, in a country where catholicism, as an ideology, still pervades most ethical | and even political standpoints. The humanist intelligentsia generally frowns at the prospect of building a kind of "humanist" Church. On the other hand, the relative lack of interest among traditionally anticlerical political parties, leaves it to humanist militancy alone to stand and fight for humanist demands.
