De Schryver's political activities (1928-1965) were determined
by his conviction that he, as a member of a political elite, was mandated
to lead the country through all political vicissitudes and with a minimal
consensus across the divides between parties and social and linguistic
groupings. That elite couldn't leave important decisions to the man on
the street, pressure groups, or even to changing political majorities, but
should keep its hands free to settle conflicts and to work on practical
solutions. Through De Schryver's intervention, political burdens, such
as the Royal Question and the school-funding controversy, were lightened.
Through his part in the "armed peace", he created the conditions
that would allow for socio-economie progress, sound budgetary management,
and a security policy.
}, month = {12}, pages = {257-268}, issn = {2736-2175}, publisher={Koninklijke Zuid-Nederlandse Maatschappij voor Taal- en Letterkunde en Geschiedenis}, journal = {Handelingen - Koninklijke Zuid-Nederlandse maatschappij voor taal- en letterkunde en geschiedenis} }
