Een typologie van de carrières van het hogere personeel van de hertogen van Bourgondië in het graafschap Vlaanderen (1419-1477)

Abstract

In the fifteenth century, the rise of the Burgundian state in the county of
Flanders brought about a specialisation and differentiation within the administrative
apparatus, though a 'bureaucracy' in the sense of Max Weber was still
not established. This contribution focusses on the careers of the superior
ducal officers of the Council of Flanders (the supreme court of law in the
county) and the Chambre des Comptes (an institution for financial control)
during the reigns of Philip the Good and Charles the Bold. Different financial
and juridical career patterns are sketched. University degrees, noble titles,
networks of social relations and patronage remained important factors in the
course of these careers.
