De contouren van een nieuw cultuurmodel: Rederijkers in Vlaanderen en Brabant in de zeventiende eeuw

Abstract

The Chambers of Rhetoric are generally considered as a cultural and
social phenomenon of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. According to the
dominant view, both in the Northern and Southern Low Countries rhetorician
culture lost its relevance in the seventeenth century. Instead of documenting
that 'decline', this article seeks to define the changing cultural functions and
social composition of the Chambers of Rhetoric in seventeenth-century
Flanders and Brabant. It will be argued that the cultural model of the seventeenth-
century rhetoricians differed considerably from that of their fifteenth and
sixteenth-century predecessors, but that it fitted well into a new political
and social context.
