"Sorrow was all my soul": een blik op de existentiële conflicten in George Herberts Temple

Abstract

George Herbert's poetry situates itself in the darkest corners of the human
psyche. His Temple, Herbert's only poetry collection in English, portrays an
afflicted soul frantically struggling to find spiritual peace. This essay attempts
to prove that the work is not, as traditionally assumed, a randomly compiled
collection of unconnected poems, but an intricate structure where each separate
poem represents a particular stage of an existential journey.
