Zwagers aan het Spaanse hof, vredesgezanten in de Nederlandse Opstand: Jan van Noircarmes (+ 1585) en Karel van Tisnacq jr. (+ 1597)
- Violet Soen
Abstract
This contribution underlines the importance of peace negotiations by two
petty noblemen during the Dutch Revolt. The brothers-in-law Selles and
Tisnacq shared high ranking positions in the Royal Archers Guard at the
Spanish Court. Through their descent, titles and court functions, they were
seen as crucial mediators, even if their negotiations did not always result into
success. Yet this article shows that their embassies from Spain to the
Netherlands, in 1578-1579 and 1592-1593, formed missing links between
rather well-known bilateral diplomatic peace conferences between Philip II
and his upraising Dutch vassals.
