Seventeenth century Dutch theatre often touched upon the subject of fashion. More than
other literary genres, such as moralizing texts, satirical poems, etc., theatre offered the
opportunity to express different views. The present article focuses on Seventeenth-century
comic theatre and assesses the various strategies playwrights used to express criticism
on fashion. Not only did they stage characters in all kinds of extravagant costumes,
they also used servants, in- and outsiders, and elderly people as criticasters of new trends
in fashion.
