De priester van Elea: Recontextualisering van het leerdicht van Parmenides

Author

Abstract

The author challenges the traditional interpretation of Parmenides as a cerebral logician
and metaphysicist by a recontextualizing view. He makes an attempt to restore Parmenides
in his quality as an important religious icon of his community. Based on
epigraphical evidence, the author re-interprets the Poem of Parmenides in a religious
framework of known ritual practices, specifically as guidelines to the practice of so-called
incubation. He argues that the text outlines incubation as a mental state which consists of
a union of understanding and being.
