Identiteitsnavigatie in passivistische verzetskranten uit WO I

Abstract

ldentity construction in Belgian, passivist resistance newspapers from World War I is
studied in this article, by drawing on Membership Categorization Analysis. More specifically,
the ever-changing and multifaceted dynamics between the ingroup and outgroup
are scrutinized. The ingroup (' us') consisted, at the core, of the passivists within the
Flemish Movement, and the outgroup ('them') was mostly taken up by the German occupier.
However, the analysis proves the intricacy of both groups extended well beyond
that. Special attention is directed towards the activists, whom took up a particularly complex
place in between both groups. Overall, the analysis, which takes a social-constructionist
viewpoint, illustrates identity construction's ephemeral nature.
