Tussen schoonheid en deftigheid: een comparatieve analyse van Antwerpse en Amsterdamse veilingadvertenties uit de achttiende eeuw
Abstract
While detailed accounts of material culture ownership patterns of the late early modern era are abundant, still surprisingly little is known about the consumer mentalities that went along with the rapidly expanding empire of goods. On the basis of newspaper ad- vertisements for auctions of household estates in Amsterdam and Antwerp, this contribu- tion maps the language of consumption on the high-end secondary markets. This reveals that, while qualities such as ‘modern’ became crucial, distinctions between old and new luxuries were not straightforward. Even though both societies were marked by a rather frugal mentality, the elitist consumption vocabulary relied heavily on ‘taste’ formation, contributing to the rising material inequalities that marked the eighteenth century.
