Abstract

The school-leaving reports from the Flemish public employment service VDAB consist- ently emphasize the crucial role of a (secondary or higher) diploma for accessing the job market. Deaf individuals have long encountered obstacles when it comes to accessing mainstream education and thus obtaining a diploma. Recent advancements regarding the use of Flemish Sign Language (VGT) interpreters in education were expected to remedy this issue. This study takes a mixed methods approach to investigate the impact of VGT interpreters on the educational achievements and employment levels of deaf adults. The findings indicate that VGT interpreters have an indirect impact on educational attainment, leading to modest improvements in employment outcomes. Nevertheless, it is important to note that a higher level of education does not always guarantee employment at a cor- responding level and neither does it provide equal opportunities for career advancement for deaf adults.
