Basilius van Seleucië over Davids (on)deugd: Sermo 17 (CPG 6656.17) nader beschouwd
Abstract
The influential fifth century metropolitan Basil of Seleucia and his literary works have received only limited attention in previous scholarship. While the lack of a critical edition and modern translations of his homilies is a contributing factor, the main cause of this neglect is the severe judgement generally passed on his persona, as pragmatic and incon- stant, and on his literary style, as displeasingly baroque. In this paper, I offer a defence against these charges and a Dutch translation of Sermo 17 based on new manuscripts and complemented with text critical notes. After a brief overview of Basil’s life and works, I focus on the positive reception of his works during his own lifetime. In the case of Sermo 17, I provide an outline of the existing editions and their specific flaws, followed by a Dutch translation based on a corrected Greek text
