De ontwikkeling van het laat-Romeins bevelhebberschap onder Constantius II (337-361)

Abstract

"This article examines the development of the office of magister militum, late-Roman senior commander, during the reign of Constantius II (337-361). Modern research has mainly investigated the origins of this office by focussing on the whole fourth century, which has given birth to misconceptions and a teleologic view on the evolution of this position. This article focuses only on the first emperor for whom we have enough sources to evaluate an imperial policy regarding these senior generals and their official title. This way it avoids the pitfall of retroactively projecting features of this office from a later period to its first decades."
