Counting the Journals, Tracing the Networks: Three Snapshots from the History of Photographic Periodicals

Author

Abstract

This article takes three inventories of early photographic periodicals, in 1864, 1877, and 1890, as a way of understanding trans-national networks of science communication as enabled by the photographic press. It notes the sharing of content and translation of materials between multiple languages and territories. It concludes that this press overall combined considerable commercial savviness with an idealistic commitment to the frictionless transmission of scientific knowledge.
