Visual and Textual Translations in Periodicals: A Few Proposals
Abstract
This article proposes to examine visual and textual translations conjointly by following periodicals in transnational and domestic circulation. It confers on visual translation an extensive sense, by considering not only the images accompanying texts and their transformations, but also compositional codes, design elements, formats, and layouts which structure that sense. French, British, Canadian, Spanish/Catalan, and Czech periodicals are discussed, and network theory summoned as well. From a first 1921 example of fin-de-siècle visual and literary material on Circe, intriguingly laid out in a respectable Parisian periodical by reference to a new play on Homer’s enchantress, this article stresses layered cultural receptions in the periodical press. A subsequent array of visual and textual translation cases bids us to look at cultural constructions with an acute sense of what textual and visual translation may entail in periodical research. This article examines the illustrated version of a short story as it emigrates from a bourgeois French periodical both to a British newspaper of broad circulation and to a Canadian middle- class review. It also shows why images, page layouts, and print codes are important in grasping the same text’s meaning. The engagement with network methodologies in one of the case studies shows how texts and images are further reinvested with new import in other cultural contexts. Offering several recommendations in a field where much remains to be done, this article concludes by highlighting the specificities of visual and textual translations in periodical cultures.
