On Post-Dictatorship, Popular Loquacity, and Marginal Periodicals: Bananas, a Free Creation Magazine Based in Valencia (1979–80)

Abstract

This article proposes a discussion on the emergence of self-published, alternative, and grassroots periodicals in neighbourhoods and towns after the end of Franco’s dictatorship in Spain (1975), then known as ‘marginal press’ [‘prensa marginal’]. Its focus is Bananas (1979–80), a magazine published by a group of young people in Valencia, which brought together poetry, illustrations, and other creative outputs. The study intends to reflect on the following: the historical singularity that characterizes the end of authoritarian regimes; the link between this conjuncture and the self-publishing gesture; and the role of marginal periodicals in articulating strategies of belonging to an alternative culture under construction.

Keywords: post-dictatorship, popular loquacity, marginal periodicals, self-publishing, offset printing, post-Francoism
