Abstract

Shi‘r (Poetry) was founded in Beirut in 1957 by Yûsuf al-Khâl (1917–87) who intended it to become the first Arabic review entirely devoted to poetry, albeit with a credo: freedom as a prerequisite to self-fulfilment and thereby the establishment of a modern society. For more than a decade (1957–64, and 1967–70), Shi‘r was a space of innovation and circulation for unpublished poems, critical reviews, and translations closely following contemporary production, and theoretical essays furthering the nascent modernism. Associated with the bustling Beirut of the 1950s and 1960s, Shi‘r was at the centre of a cultural ecosystem it contributed to enrich and dynamize thanks to its Thursday sessions, Shi‘r’s Prize, the publishing house Shi‘r, the review Adab and the art gallery Gallery One. Its Thursdays constituted for more than seven years (1957–64) a space of reception for unpublished poems (read, commented, promoted). The media platform offered to the Thursday sessions by al-Nahar, among other Lebanese newspapers, allowed the Shi‘r movement to both further clarify its revolutionary message, its modernist orientations, and defend itself against the repeated attacks of pan-Arab intellectuals strenuously attached to inherite poetic tradition. This article highlights these media aspects.
