Acceptance of change, locus of control and flourishing in young adults

Abstract

The labour market is dynamic and constantly evolving, which means that young people will likely explore different career paths throughout their professional journey (Donovan et al., 2023). In modern society, a person’s ability to face change (acceptance of change) is highly valued in the individual, professional and social spheres, and research in these areas is of practical significance. The construct acceptance of change can be seen as one of a disposition to think critically. The aim of the study is to analyse the relationships of acceptance of change (and its dimensions of internalism and externalism) to optimal flourishing (representing the achievement of life). One hundred and two younger working adults (52% female) were surveyed using three measurement scales (acceptance of change, locus of control, and flourishing). Our findings suggest a positive moderate relationship between support for change, predisposition to change and flourishing. There was a significant weak positive relationship with flourishing in the case of positive reaction to change. A predisposition to change could partly identify a person on a continuum of locus of control towards the pole of internalism (weak negative relationship between the constructs). This suggests organizations should invest in helping their employees to adapt to change and support their positive attitude to change, because this helps to promote their well-being; and this in turn supports the future success of the organization. The components of acceptance of change represents one of the most important qualities of young people in the work domain.
