Een gezamenlijke abortuservaring: een normatieve analyse van de betrokkenheid van partners in abortuscentra
Samenvatting
Induced abortion is a widespread practice in Belgium and most western societies. Although many male partners are confronted with an abortion of their partner, some of them feel excluded and ignored in abortion clinics. In this article, we examine three possible justifications for the exclusion of the male partner. These justifications are, first, the idea of abortion as a solely female issue, second, risks of reproductive coercion, and third, possible negative effects on the wellbeing of the pregnant person. Having examined these justifications, we argue that in a well-functioning relationship, abortion is a shared experience. Since partners have moral and relational duties towards one another, the pregnant person should be able to involve their male partner throughout the abortion trajectory. In conclusion, a partnerfriendly environment should be promoted in abortion clinics.
