Arrogantie in een machtsongelijke samenleving: wanneer zijn beschuldigingen van arrogantie terecht?
Samenvatting
In literature on arrogance, the concept is often discussed as something abstract, and if it is applied to particular people, it is usually to those in power. In practice, however, the concept is applied to people from all layers of society. I will examine the way in which arrogance is strongly intertwined with the concepts of 'legitimacy' and 'entitlement'. As a result of this interwovenness, individuals or groups, whose claim to influence or right to speak is not considered legitimate, are more likely to be seen as arrogant when they try to claim these rights. By intertwining arrogance with legitimacy and entitlement, the concept of arrogance invites the reinforcement of oppressive dynamics such as silencing and affective injustice. The concept and social practice surrounding 'arrogance' therefore call for reform in the form of re-evaluation or revision.
