Neemt (gezond) en eet (met mate)
Samenvatting
This essay aims to explore the narrowing down of food to calorieintake, leading to narrow-minded moralization in prevention campaigns against obesity. Health seems to be the only value at stake. The multitude of personal, social and cultural meanings of food is thus neglected. Because these campaigns consider eating the result of individual and well-considered choices, and neglect other values attached, they are ineffective as well as unethical. Their only target is personal responsibility, while neglecting social responsibilities. However, food choices are only partially the result of individual deliberation. Food choices are as often made by unconscious motives or determined by the circumstances. Effective and ethical prevention campaigns promoting healthy food behavior should take into account that eating is more than merely food intake. Examination of the multitude of meanings associated with food reveals that health is but one aspect of eating. Food is also an expression of values such as generosity, enjoyment and…the good life.
