Een schepje er bovenop…: redelijke culturele verschillen in het geval van obesitas bij jonge kinderen?
Samenvatting
Problems of obesity and overweight are serious in Western countries, and are even present among young children. The chances that children will develop obesity depends on many factors, amongst which social-economic status or overweight of their parents as well as their ethnic background. Concerning the latter, different food habits and a different valuing of nutrition and food can influence the way children are raised and fed. In this article we examine whether there are indications that parents from specific ethnic backgrounds indeed value weight, beauty and nutrition in such different ways that it could possibly shed a different light on the prevention of obesity among young children. It might be, we argue, that these reasons, when fundamental to their way of life, could be considered reasonable. If so, this will have consequences for the means we are justified to intervene with Public Health policies.
