Volksgezondheid, gezond volk: een foucaultiaanse analyse van onze hedendaagse gezondheidsobsessie
Samenvatting
Has the imperative ‘thou shalt be healthy’ not become one of the most powerful moral imperatives of our times? This imperative is not only operative in the way industry or commercials are trying to seduce us to consume their products. Also politics, health insurance and private insurance companies are promoting more and more mass sports, fitness and a healthy lifestyle. According to Michel Foucault, what we are dealing with today – public health as an explicit task of contemporary politics – can be understood as the culmination of an ongoing process of government of our daily life out of a medical perspective. With concepts like ‘governmentality’, ‘pastoral power’ or ‘population’, Foucault attempts to conceive the question how the care for public health became indeed a central task and for politics and for all of us.
