Samenvatting
A philosophical analysis of the implications of evolutionary biology and genetics for the moral statute of nature: nature as not immoral nor good, but completely indifferent.- We argue that no values or norms can be derived from nature and the process of natural selection. First, nature is complex. All sorts of phenomena, cruel as well as wonderful, occur in both living and non-living nature. Second, we argue that both living beings as their physical environment are the result of neutral, causal processes. Therefore, we have to explain why we think of natural selection and of the genes as indifferent - and finally, why we consider the genes as the fundamental elements in evolution.
