Documenta 41.2 (2023) is out!

This special issue of Documenta: journal for theater delves into the reciprocal relationship between ‘Theater and Law’, establishing an interdisciplinary space for justice that transcends conventional legal boundaries. In contrast to traditional, rigid judicial frameworks that revolve around accusing and sentencing clearly defined defendants, the performing and visual arts provide a reflective environment for reevaluating legal cases and systems. Each article in this issue aspires to reconceptualize established legal perspectives by presenting artistically inspired alternatives. The contributions illustrate how the performing and visual arts foster empathetic and progressive alternatives to the judicial process, both within and beyond traditional court settings.

Dit themanummer van Documenta: tijdschrift voor theater verdiept zich in de wederzijdse relatie tussen 'Theater en Recht'. Daarbij wordt een interdisciplinaire ruimte voor rechtvaardigheid gecreëerd die de conventionele juridische grenzen overstijgt. In tegenstelling tot de traditionele juridische kaders die draaien om het beschuldigen en veroordelen van verdachten, bieden theater en de beeldende kunsten een reflectieve omgeving voor het heroverwegen van juridische procedures. Elk artikel in deze editie streeft ernaar gevestigde juridische perspectieven te herconceptualiseren door artistiek geïnspireerde alternatieven te presenteren. De verschillende bijdragen illustreren hoe theater en de beeldende kunsten daarbij empathische en progressieve alternatieven naar voren schuiven, zowel binnen als buiten de traditionele rechtszaal.
